How to Play on Chess Mates
Getting started is easy — here is your complete guide to joining the global chess community, playing your first game, and making the most of every feature on the platform.
Getting Started in 3 Steps
Create Your Account
Visit chessmatesclub.com and click "Play Now" on the welcome screen. You can sign in instantly using your Google Account — no separate registration or password needed. This creates your Chess Mates profile, including a display name, avatar, and starting ELO rating of 1200. You can also explore the platform as a Guest without signing in, though Guest accounts cannot save progress, add friends, or post to the social feed.
Choose Your Game Mode
Navigate to the Play Chess tab in the lobby. Chess Mates offers multiple ways to play:
- Quick Game vs Bot: Start an instant game against our AI at Easy, Medium, or Hard difficulty. Perfect for warming up or practicing new openings.
- Auto-Matchmaking: Click "Find Match" to be paired with a random opponent from around the world based on your rating.
- Create Private Room: Generate a shareable invite link to play with a specific friend. Share the link via WhatsApp, Telegram, or any messenger.
- Challenge a Friend: Send a direct challenge to any player on your friends list. They will receive an instant notification.
Play, Connect & Rank Up
Once your game starts, make moves by clicking or dragging pieces. The game interface includes a real-time clock, move history panel, and in-game chat. Win matches to increase your ELO rating and climb the Global Leaderboard! Connect with opponents by adding them as friends, sending reactions on the social feed, or challenging them to a rematch.
Exploring the Platform
🎨 Customizing Your Board Theme
Before starting a Quick Game, you will see a Theme Picker popup. Choose from Classic boards (Tournament Green, Classic Wood, Ice Crystal) or Animated boards (Cartoon Kingdom, Neon Arcade, Candy Land, and more). Animated boards feature expressive piece characters that react to captures, checks, and promotions with unique emotions and animations. Your theme preference is saved automatically for future games.
📹 Using Voice & Video Chat
During any multiplayer game, click the camera or microphone icons to start a video or voice call with your opponent. This is a peer-to-peer WebRTC connection — your audio and video are sent directly to your opponent without being stored on any server. Spectators watching your game can also see both players' camera feeds.
🌐 The Social Feed
The Social Feed is the heart of the Chess Mates community. Here you can post text updates, share images, embed YouTube videos, and react with emoji. Our automated bot "Chess Dude" posts trending chess content, news, and viral clips throughout the day. The latest chess-related video is always pinned to the top of the feed so you never miss important content.
💬 Chat & Direct Messages
Use the Public Lobby Chat to talk with everyone currently on the platform. For private conversations, open a Direct Message with any friend from your friends list. The DM panel supports text, emoji, and GIFs. You can also initiate a voice or video call directly from the DM overlay.
🎮 Mini-Games
Need a break from chess? Head to the Game Room tab and challenge friends to Tic-Tac-Toe, Connect Four, or Rock Paper Scissors. All mini-games use the same matchmaking system as chess, so you can play with anyone on the platform.
🏆 Leaderboard & Rankings
Check the Leaderboard tab to see the top-rated players globally or filter to just your friends. Your ELO rating updates after every ranked match — wins increase your rating, losses decrease it, and the amount depends on your opponent's strength. Draw games cause a small adjustment based on the rating difference.
